Stair remodeling and railing installation in Lebanon and Lancaster County, PA

New stairs, treads and railings, built in place

Stairs are the one thing most remodelers avoid. We build them. Replacing carpeted treads with oak, swapping wood spindles for iron balusters, or tearing out a steep old staircase and setting new stringers: we have done all of it, in rowhomes and in farmhouses.

Why Amazing Builders

Why homeowners call us for stairs and railings

We build stairs in house

Most remodelers subcontract stairs or avoid them. Our crew cuts stringers, sets treads and installs railings ourselves, which is why we can rebuild a staircase inside a renovation without waiting on anyone.

Code is not optional

Rise within three-eighths of an inch step to step, treads at least ten inches, handrail at 34 to 38 inches, no gap a four-inch ball can pass. We build to it and the inspector agrees.

From a tread swap to a whole new stair

New oak treads on sound stringers in a day or two. Iron balusters in an afternoon. A new staircase from the stringers up inside a gutted house.

Finished last, so it stays finished

On a renovation we fit temporary treads for the crew and install the oak and the railings in the final weeks. New stairs should not be a construction stair.

What is included

Everything from the first day to the last coat of paint

A stair job changes how a whole house feels, and it is usually finished in days, not weeks.

  • Painted or stained risers
  • Iron or wood balusters, newel posts and handrails
  • New stringers and complete staircase rebuilds
  • Landings, loft railings and half walls

How we do it

Stairs and railings, step by step

  1. 1

    Inspection

We probe the stringers, sight the run for sag, measure every rise and check the headroom and handrail height. The walkthrough decides whether it is a retread, a railing job or a rebuild.

  2. 2

    Design and samples

Tread species, riser color, newel style, iron or wood balusters, handrail profile. We bring samples so the stair matches the floors and the trim.

  3. 3

    Demolition or carpet removal

Carpet and old treads off, or the whole stair out in a rebuild. Stringers checked again once they are exposed.

  4. 4

    Structure

New stringers cut and set to even rises, or existing stringers shimmed true. Temporary treads if the house is under construction.

  5. 5

    Treads, risers, newel, rail

Treads fitted and fastened, risers set, newel posts anchored, handrail cut, fitted and returned into the wall at the top.

  6. 6

    Balusters, finish, walkthrough

Balusters set at code spacing, treads sealed, risers painted, a last check of every rise and the rail with a level.

Options

Treads and railings we install

Red oak treadsThe standard. Hard, takes stain or clear finish, matches most hardwood and vinyl plank floors.

Iron balustersSquare or twisted, black or bronze, set into treads and rail. Our most requested look.
Wood balustersPainted white with a stained rail for a traditional stair.
Oak handrail and newelsStained to the treads or painted. Returned into the wall at the top as code asks.

Where we do this

We rebuild stairs across Lebanon County, in the colonials around Hershey, Lititz and Manheim, and in city rowhomes in Lebanon and Philadelphia, where the old steep stair is usually the first thing to go in a renovation.

Stairs and railings: questions people ask us

Can you replace just the carpet with wood treads?

Yes, if the stringers are sound. We pull the carpet, check the treads underneath, and either refinish them or fit new oak treads with painted risers. A straight run is one to two days.

My stairs are steep. Can you fix that without moving walls?

Sometimes. Extending the bottom of the run into the room gains tread depth and lowers each rise. If the room does not allow it, we tell you honestly that the stair stays steep.

Do iron balusters need a different railing?

No. They set into the existing oak rail and treads with epoxy and shoes. Spacing is kept under four inches.

Can you match new treads to my hardwood floor?

Red oak treads can be stained to match most oak floors. For vinyl plank floors we pick a close tone; an exact match is not possible across materials.

Is a permit needed for stairs?

A railing or tread replacement, no. A new staircase with new stringers, yes, because rise, run, headroom and railing height are inspected.

Do you do loft and landing railings?

Yes, with the same oak and iron or painted wood, at 36 inches for a guard. Half walls can be replaced with railings to open a loft.
