Siding Replacement Cost in Lebanon County and Myerstown, PA: Vinyl, Fiber Cement, Engineered Wood and Cedar Compared (2026)
By the Amazing Builders crew, Myerstown, PA. Prices quoted are typical ranges for our region, not a quote for your house. Ask for one.
Re-siding a house in Lebanon County runs from about $9,000 for vinyl on a small ranch to $30,000 and more for fiber cement on a two-story. Per square foot, vinyl is $4 to $9 installed, engineered wood $6 to $11, fiber cement $9 to $18, and cedar $9 to $14 plus a lifetime of staining. The material is half the decision; the other half is what is under the old siding, which nobody knows until it comes off.

Cost and lifespan by material
| Siding | Per square foot, installed | Expected life |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl | $4 to $9 | 20 to 40 years |
| Engineered wood (LP SmartSide and similar) | $6 to $11 | 25 to 40 years |
| Fiber cement (Hardie and similar) | $9 to $18 | 50 years and more |
| Natural wood, cedar and similar | $9 to $14 | 20 to 40 years with regular upkeep |
For a whole house:
- Vinyl: roughly $9,000 to $22,000. The budget option by a wide margin.
- Engineered wood: roughly $11,000 to $20,000. Between vinyl's price and fiber cement's durability.
- Fiber cement: roughly $16,000 to $30,000 and up. The long-life choice, heavier to install.
- Cedar: roughly $15,000 to $28,000, plus staining every few years that the others do not need.
Labor is 40 to 50 percent of the bill. Siding is detail work around every window, corner and penetration, and a house with a lot of trim costs more than a plain box of the same size.
Marysville, PASep 2025afterSigns you need new siding, not paint
- Vinyl that is cracked, warped or chalky, or panels that have pulled loose in wind.
- Wood siding with rot you can push a screwdriver into, especially at the bottom courses and under windows.
- Paint that peels within a year or two of being redone: moisture is coming through from behind.
- Bubbling or soft spots in the sheathing you can feel through the siding.
- Mold, mildew or insect damage that comes back after cleaning.
- A heating bill that climbs every winter with no other explanation.
Faded or dirty siding that is otherwise sound is a wash or a paint job; our exterior painting guide covers that. Damaged siding is a replacement.
The four materials, honestly
Vinyl. Cheap, never needs paint, and modern vinyl is thicker and holds color far better than the panels from the nineties. It can crack in a hard cold snap if hit, it can warp near a grill or a reflective window, and dark colors fade faster. For most houses in Lebanon, Myerstown and Palmyra it is the sensible choice.
Engineered wood. Wood strands and resin pressed into a plank with a wood texture, pre-primed. Looks more like real wood than vinyl, takes paint, resists insects, and costs less than fiber cement. It must be kept painted and the cut ends sealed.
Fiber cement. Cement, sand and cellulose. Fireproof, insect-proof, holds paint for 15 years, and lasts half a century. It is heavy, dusty to cut, and takes longer to install, which is most of its cost. For a house you plan to keep, it is the best value over time.
Cedar. The real thing, and beautiful on a farmhouse. It needs stain or paint every few years and it is the one material that pests and woodpeckers like. We install it for owners who want it and know the upkeep.
What is under the old siding
This is the part a quote cannot predict. When the old siding comes off we find:
- Sound sheathing and old felt. The common case. New housewrap goes over it and the new siding goes on.
- Rotten sheathing around windows and at the bottom of walls, from decades of leaks. It is replaced by the sheet. On an old house this can add a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.
- No sheathing at all on some 19th-century houses, just siding on studs. New sheathing goes on first.
- Old insulation or none. With the wall open it is the cheapest moment to add insulation or a layer of foam board; the ENERGY STAR sealing guide explains the gains.
We price the siding and list the sheathing repair as a per-sheet allowance, so you know the number before we start and the surprise, if any, is small.
The installation, in order
- Old siding and trim off, sheathing inspected and repaired.
- Housewrap, taped at seams, with flashing tape at every window and door.
- Starter strip, corner posts, J-channel at openings.
- Siding courses from the bottom up, nailed loosely so vinyl can move with temperature, or blind-nailed for fiber cement and engineered wood.
- Trim, soffit and fascia if they are part of the job.
- Caulk, cleanup, final walk.
A typical two-story house takes a crew one to two weeks.
PennsylvaniaAug 2022afterSiding on Lebanon County houses
The brick and stone houses in the boroughs usually have siding only on a rear addition or a gable. Farmhouses have wood that has been painted thirty times. Post-war ranches have aluminum or first-generation vinyl that has done its job. Each gets a different conversation: a brick house might only need the addition re-sided to match; a farmhouse might be a candidate for engineered wood that looks like the clapboard it replaces; a ranch is the classic vinyl re-side.
Our exterior work also covers trim, fences and small carpentry; the board-and-batten screen we built in Marysville was painted to match the house's siding exactly, which is the kind of detail that makes new work look like it was always there.
Resale and warranties
Siding is one of the better-returning exterior projects because it changes the whole house at once; fiber cement and vinyl both recover a large share of their cost at sale. Vinyl and fiber cement carry long manufacturer warranties, sometimes lifetime on the material; the labor warranty is the contractor's, and it is worth asking how long. Consumer Reports and This Old House both have good material comparisons.
Pennsylvania requires a written contract for any home improvement job over $500 and registration with the Attorney General for contractors doing more than $5,000 a year.
