Flooring Installation Cost in Lebanon County, PA: Vinyl Plank, Hardwood, Laminate and Tile Compared (2026)

By the Amazing Builders crew, Myerstown, PA. Prices quoted are typical ranges for our region, not a quote for your house. Ask for one.

Installed flooring in Lebanon County runs $3 to $20 per square foot. Laminate is at the bottom, natural stone at the top, and the floor most of our clients choose now, vinyl plank, is at $4 to $9. A standard 200-square-foot bedroom is therefore anywhere from $600 to $3,000 and up. The material is the big variable; the subfloor under it is the one people forget, and it is the one that decides whether the floor is still flat in five years.

What each floor is actually like to live on

Vinyl plank (LVP). Waterproof, warm underfoot, quiet, and installed as a floating floor with no glue or nails. The oak looks are convincing from standing height. It handles dogs, kids and a wet basement. What it is not: real wood. It cannot be refinished, and cheap versions dent under a refrigerator. We install the thicker commercial-grade planks with an attached pad.

Laminate. A photo of wood under a hard wear layer. Scratch-resistant and cheap, but most laminates swell if water sits on them, so they stay out of kitchens and baths.

Engineered hardwood. A real wood veneer over a plywood core. More stable than solid wood in Pennsylvania's humid summers and dry winters, and it can be refinished once or twice depending on the veneer thickness.

Solid hardwood. The floor that lasts a century and can be refinished five times. It moves with the seasons, which is why it needs a week to acclimate in the house and a proper expansion gap. Not for basements or over concrete.

Porcelain and ceramic tile. Waterproof, hard, cold, and permanent. The right floor for a bathroom, a mudroom, a basement with a laundry, and a kitchen if you do not mind standing on it. Porcelain is denser than ceramic and the better choice for floors.

Natural stone. Slate, travertine, marble. Beautiful, expensive, and a maintenance commitment: sealing, and in marble's case, etching from anything acidic.

The subfloor is where floors fail

A floor is only as flat as what is under it. Before any plank or tile goes down:

  • The old floor comes up, or we confirm the new one can go over it. Vinyl plank over a flat old tile floor, yes. Anything over carpet, never.
  • The subfloor is screwed to the joists to stop squeaks. Old houses in Lebanon and Myerstown have nailed subfloors that have worked loose for sixty years.
  • High spots are sanded and low spots filled with leveling compound. Vinyl plank shows every hump; tile cracks over every dip.
  • For tile, a cement board or uncoupling membrane goes down first. Tile set straight on plywood cracks at the grout lines within a year.
  • On a concrete slab, a moisture test. Our basement flooring guide covers that.

Subfloor prep is usually $1 to $3 per square foot and shows up as its own line in our estimate. A quote that does not mention it is a quote for a floor that will be installed over whatever is there.

Which floor for which room

  • Kitchen: vinyl plank or porcelain. Water, dropped pans, chairs.
  • Bathroom: porcelain tile. Vinyl plank is acceptable in a half bath.
  • Basement: vinyl plank in a dry basement, tile where there is a laundry or any water history, carpet only over a tested dry slab.
  • Living and dining: hardwood or engineered hardwood if the budget allows, vinyl plank if not. Run it through into the kitchen without a threshold; we did that across a whole South Philadelphia rowhome and it is the reason the narrow house feels wide.
  • Bedrooms: anything. Carpet is still the warmest and quietest.
  • Stairs: real wood treads, or carpet. Vinyl plank on stairs needs special nosings and rarely looks right. Our stairs page covers treads.

Direction, transitions and trim

Planks run the long way of the room, or toward the main light source. In a house with several rooms on one floor they run in one direction through all of them. Transitions between different floors should be flat strips, not raised thresholds. New shoe molding or quarter round hides the expansion gap at the walls; we prefer shoe molding because it is smaller.

Old Lebanon County floors

Many houses here have original pine or oak under layers of carpet and vinyl. Before we quote new flooring we look. A worn oak floor that can be sanded and refinished for $3 to $5 per square foot is often the best floor in the house. Pine floors are soft and show every dent but they are 150 years old and nothing new matches them.

Timeline

A 200-square-foot room in vinyl plank or laminate is a day, including removal and shoe molding. Hardwood is two to three days plus acclimation time before. Tile is two to three days including the cure before grout and another day before furniture goes back. A whole first floor in vinyl plank, about 800 square feet, is two to three days.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest floor to install in Lebanon County? Laminate, at $3 to $8 per square foot installed. Vinyl plank is a dollar or two more and worth it anywhere water can reach.

Is vinyl plank better than laminate? For kitchens, baths and basements, yes, because it is waterproof. For a dry bedroom they are close, and laminate resists scratches slightly better.

Can you install new floors over old tile? Vinyl plank, yes, if the tile is flat and sound. New tile over old tile is possible but adds height at every door.

How much does it cost to refinish hardwood? Usually $3 to $5 per square foot in our area, which is less than any new floor.
